There is a great joke which my father loves to tell. “David goes to Temple to talk to God. Sam goes to Temple to talk to David.” My father tells this joke because he is Sam in the joke. Before the pandemic, he loved to go to Temple, but not to pray – praying is definitely not his thing. He went for the oneg! My dad is a very social person, and he became a big synagogue attendee because he loves the community and the social aspects of being Jewish. It doesn’t mat-ter if it is a service, adult education, a social action program, a social event, a committee meeting. My dad would be there if there were people to schmooze with, a cup of coffee and a nosh. He and I are very different in how we live our lives as Jews and practice Judaism. But that is perfectly fine, because there are a lot of ways to be Jewish and a lot of different kinds of Jews. Read more . . .
